Weld County oil spills for June 9 – Greeley Tribune


The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks.

Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual “spills” do occur among the 24,000-plus wells in the county.

» DCP OPERATING COMPANY LP reported June 4 a gas-gathering pipeline system spill near Weld County roads 78 and 23, about 1.5 miles northeast of Severance. The operator’s Form 19 does not indicate what was spilled nor how much. Personnel saw distressed vegetation in the area, and an integrity test was conducted. No leak nor potential for release was found. “Based on visual and field observations it does not appear that a release had occurred,” the operator stated on the form.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported June 4 a tank battery spill near Weld 40 and 47, about 7.5 miles east of Gilcrest. Less than a barrel of oil spilled. A split valve inside the separator cabinet caused the unintentional release. Excavation began June 4.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported June 4 a tank battery spill about 3.5 miles north of Weld 20 and 59, about 5 miles north of Keenesburg. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. A lab analysis showed 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene concentrations exceeded the groundwater soil protection standard. Assessment is ongoing.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 3 a tank battery spill near Weld 24 and U.S. 85, about 2.5 miles south of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found at the separator during plugging and abandonment. Assessment is ongoing.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 3 a well spill near Weld 24 and U.S. 85, about 2.5 miles south of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found during plugging and abandonment at the wellhead. Assessment is ongoing.

» BONANZA CREEK ENERGY OPERATING COMPANY LLC reported June 3 a well spill about 2 miles northeast of Weld 50 and 69, about 7 miles east of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil spilled. Historical impacts were found during wellhead cut and cap site assessment. The impacts developed over the lifetime of the well, not from a single event. Impacted soil will be removed.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 3 a well spill near Weld 12 and 11, in Dacono. About 2 barrels of oil and produced water spilled. The spill is suspected to be due to a flowline failure. Assessment is ongoing.

» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported June 3 an off-location flowline spill near Weld 6 and 15, south of Dacono. Between 1 and 5 barrels each of oil and produced water spilled. The associated well has been shut in since mid January. Excavation is required.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 2 a well spill near Weld 36 and 33, about 2 miles southeast of Gilcrest. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found after cut and cap operations at the wellhead. The release became reportable due to the quantity of soil excavated.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 2 a well spill near Weld 30 and 43, about 6 miles north of Hudson. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found after cut and cap operations at the wellhead. The release became reportable due to the quantity of impacted soil that was excavated.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 2 a well spill near Weld 32 and 33, about 3 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found during plugging and abandonment at the wellhead. Assessment is ongoing.

» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported June 2 an off-location flowline spill near Weld 12 and 17, about 1 mile southeast of Dacono. Less than a barrel each of oil and produced water spilled. The release daylighted a day before, and the operator was notified. Associated wells were immediately shut in, and excavation started June 2 to remove surface impacts.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 1 a well spill near Weld 22 and 41, about 3 miles northeast of Aristocrat Ranchettes. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found during plugging and abandonment at the wellhead. Assessment is ongoing.

» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported June 1 a well spill near Colo. 52 and Weld 3.25, about 4 miles northeast of Erie. The operator’s Form 19 does not indicate what was spilled nor how much. A COGCC inspection led to the discovery of a wellhead mechanical issue. The operator found a loose connection on the bradenhead access.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported June 1 a tank battery spill near 30th Avenue and Weld 47, north of Hudson. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found at two above-ground storage tanks during partial facility closure. Assessment is ongoing.

» HIGHPOINT OPERATING CORPORATION reported June 1 a tank battery spill near Weld 128 and 75, about 5 miles southwest of Hereford. About 2.5 barrels of produced water spilled. A third-party water hauler with a compromised valve on the truck spilled the produced water outside containment, on the plated pad surface. Impacted soil was removed and taken to an approved disposal facility.

» PDC ENERGY INC reported June 1 a tank battery spill near Weld 50 and 49, about 2 miles southwest of Kersey. Between 5 and 100 barrels of produced water spilled. The produced water tank was overfilled and spilled into secondary containment. Clean-up is underway.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 28 a tank battery spill near Weld 32 and 51, about 10 miles northwest of Keenesburg. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. The operator found a historical release at the tank battery during facility closure. Benzene and trimethylbenzene concentrations exceeded groundwater protection standards.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported May 27 a well spill near Weld 32 and 39, about 5 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found during plugging and abandonment at the wellheads. Assessment is ongoing.

» DCP OPERATING COMPANY LP reported May 26 a gas gathering pipeline spill near Weld 4 and 55, about 5 miles southeast of Hudson. Less than a barrel of condensate spilled. The operator noticed distressed vegetation at the project location during routine inspections, finding a pinhole leak in the pipeline.
